Since our founding, BLOC Coffee Company has cared about three things:
Coffee | Community | Change
Dwight and Stephanie Young, founders of BLOC Ministries, had been serving the urban neighborhoods of Cincinnati’s Price Hill community for almost ten years when they decided to open BLOC Coffee Company in 2007.
“We needed a place for people to gather, a place where people could come together, have a conversation over a great cup of coffee, and experience community. We wanted to create an atmosphere where people could get to know their neighbors and develop relationships with one another, where we could help strengthen the fabric of the neighborhood,” said Dwight.
At its first location on Price Avenue, BLOC Coffee did double-duty as both a coffee shop and a venue for BLOC’s after-school programs. Patrons would enjoy their coffee seated in comfy chairs next to shelves stuffed with kids’ books and tables topped with computer workstations.
In 2019, BLOC Coffee moved to its current location in the heart of Price Hill’s Incline District on Mt. Hope Avenue. BLOC Coffee has evolved into a social enterprise that provides job training opportunities and retail space for products created by the women served by BLOC Ministries’ Redeemed Home.
BLOC’s Redeemed Home offers long-term daily intervention and transitional living for women who have experienced trafficking, prostitution, and substance use disorders. Many of the women who participate in Redeemed programs have come to us through our sister program, Weightless Anchor.
So come on in and enjoy some great coffee and conversation. Stay awhile. And know that with every sip and every sandwich, you are helping to change the community and—most importantly—the lives of those behind the counter.
